Pro-Choice Arizona Applauds Legal Challenge to Harmful Abortion Restrictions
The advocacy group and abortion fund urges lawmakers to instead support abortion access
PHOENIX (Aug. 18, 2021)--This week, Arizona physicians and advocates represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights filed a lawsuit challenging two abortion restrictions passed this year as part of SB 1457. The case calls on the court to block these restrictions from taking effect as scheduled in September. In response, Pro-Choice Arizona Executive Director Eloisa Lopez (she/her/ella) released the following statement:
“I’m proud to see Arizona health care providers taking action against these politically-motivated restrictions that would attack the rights of pregnant people seeking abortions in our state. Anti-abortion lawmakers have already made Arizona one of the hardest states to get abortion care in‒ our volunteers talk with people every day who come to our abortion fund for help covering the costs of their abortion and for help figuring out the complicated, medically unnecessary red tape that these politicians have put up to push abortion care out of reach.
“The new restrictions set to go into effect in September would only make the situation worse, especially for people of color, people with low incomes and people living in rural areas. This year, with Roe v. Wade under attack, it’s more important than ever that we reject these cruel, pointless restrictions and demand that our legislators and leaders actually support the needs of Arizona families and make abortion more accessible and affordable for all. Every person deserves access to the reproductive healthcare they need regardless of their income, race, age, gender, immigration status or where they live. Our abortion fund will continue to do everything we can to support people as they make the decisions that will allow them to live healthy, free lives.”
