Pederson vows to support a woman’s right to choose, as vulnerable anti-choice incumbent Jon Kyl continues his divisive attacks in WashingtonWashington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, an organization with the nation’s largest bipartisan pro-choice political action committee and nearly 18,000 members and activists in Arizona, announced its endorsement of U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson today.
Pederson, who is running against anti-choice Sen. Jon Kyl, is a strong supporter of a woman’s right to choose.
“NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to endorse Jim Pederson. He is a strong pro-choice candidate who supports the values of freedom, privacy, and personal responsibility,” Keenan said. “For years as Arizona’s Senator, Jon Kyl has been complicit in divisive attacks on a woman’s right to choose, while opposing commonsense measures that would prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion. We’re confident that Arizona voters will respond by electing pro-choice Jim Pederson in November.”
Sen. Kyl has twice cosponsored amendments to the Constitution to outlaw abortion in almost all circumstances, including rape and incest. (H.J. Res.104, 100th Congress; H.J.Res.103, 101st Congress) As a vocal member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he helped rubberstamp anti-choice federal judges, including two right-wing Supreme Court nominees: John Roberts and Samuel Alito. (Senate vote #245, 9/29/05; Senate vote #1, 1/30/06; Senate vote #2, 1/31/06)
Further he recently voted against a package of commonsense measures, including better access to birth control, which would help Arizona couples plan their families and thus reduce the need for abortion. (Senate vote #75, 3/17/05)
