NARAL PRO-CHOICE ARIZONA RESPONDS TO SENATOR MCCAIN’S WORK ON THE “NUCLEAR OPTION” COMPROMISE
NARAL PRO-CHOICE ARIZONA RESPONDS TO SENATOR MCCAIN’S WORK ON THE “NUCLEAR OPTION” COMPROMISE Phoenix, AZ – NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona issued a statement in response to Senator John McCain’s role in the efforts to avert the "nuclear option" and operate under a bipartisan deal that preserves the filibuster for an expected Supreme Court vacancy. NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona State Coordinator Heather Terrell said: "Senator McCain’s work on the 'nuclear option' compromise prevented the Senate from dismissing the time-honored tradition of checks and balances and kept the filibuster in place in the event of a Supreme Court vacancy. We also support Senator McCain's recommendation that President Bush consult with senators on judicial nominees, rather than confront them with divisive nominees. It is our hope that Senator McCain will stand up for moderation and vote against Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor, who represent a threat to the individual freedoms like the right to privacy Arizonans support." As part of its “Choose Justice” campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona worked tirelessly to educate voters and rally opposition to the “nuclear option” in cities across the state. More than 2,000 pro-choice activists in Arizona spoke out, on petitions and through NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Rapid Responder program, urging the Senate to preserve its honored tradition of debate and deliberation. # # # Contact: Heather Terrell, NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona Field Organizer, (480) 834.3274
