Women of Color
Teen birthrates are especially high among Arizona's Hispanic teenagers. A 2005 report by the Department of Health Services and the Arizona Republic found that more Hispanic teenagers became pregnant that year than all other racial and ethnic groups combined. Experts cite poverty, a large immigrant population, taboos about sex and birth control, and lack of information and access to birth control as factors in this high rate. NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona is working with a national research firm to conduct an analysis of public opinion among Latina women in the southwest to assess the kinds of communication strategies that may help reduce the high teen pregnancy rate among this population.
